Updates & Resources

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At this time, we are waiting to hear from the system level what the next steps will be in regards to future programming for our students. Information will be communicated as soon as we know more from the Calgary Board of Education. This is a new situation for everyone and we want to assure you that the school will be communicating this information to our families as soon as we have a plan and procedures in place. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

In the meantime, the CBE has put together some resources until a long-range plan is in place.  To access the resources, please click on the link

In addition to the resources in the link, please find some additional ideas below:

Journals
Students are encouraged to write about a topic of their choice. They can write a fictional story they can continue to write each day. Please ask your child what their writing should include and use our C.O.P.S. editing strategy.
- Capital Letters (Proper placement of upper and lower-case letters)
- Overused words (got, had, said)
- Punctuation (periods, commas, question mark, exclamation mark)
- Spelling
- Sound words
- Detailed picture to match text

Here is a list of common words your child may want to reference to help them edit spelling:

Fry's Second 100

Reading – Levelled Book
Strategies to Focus on:
-       Fluency & Expression (no robot reading), tracking text with your eyes or finger.
-       Are you able to retell the text with supporting details and/or in sequence?
-       Comprehension (making connections, visualize, making inferences, summarize)

Please feel free to email me if you require support or which level your child is reading at and what they are working towards.

Reading to Others (Parents, Siblings, Grandparents, Stuffed Animals etc.)

Raz-Kids (each child knows their login info)

Epic Books (Class Code: ynm2342)

Math
Additionally, students can show you a math game we learned in class such as Salute, Addition Snap, and Double-Digit Addition Snap.

Complete the following word problems. Please have your child represent double digit addition questions in a variety of ways using a number line, number sentence, tens and ones, and pictures.

In our classroom, we have 25 books about animals and 42 books about weather. How many books do we have in total?

John has 27 marbles. His sister, Sarah has 33 marbles. John gives his sister all of his marbles. How many marbles does Sarah have now?

Ben has 53 baseball cards, his friend Pat gives him 24 cards for his birthday. How many cards goes Ben have in total?

Molly read a book for 36 minutes on Monday. On Wednesday, she read a book for 19 minutes. How many minutes did she read in total?

March 13th

Current Learning

In math, we continued to practice the traditional/standard algorithm with a focus on double digit addition and regrouping. We also reviewed our math games and different ways we can solve a math problem. Lastly, we discussed how we can arrive at the same solution using different strategies.

In writing, we edited our stories using COPS (Capital Letters, Overused words, punctuation and spelling). We used this strategy during peer editing and incorporated this into editing the final drafts of our stories. We also planned our layout and illustrations for our own books.

In social studies we are wrapping up our Iqaluit study. After spring break we will begin the Meteghan unit.

Library Books

If your child has not yet returned their library book please ensure their books are returned by Tuesday March 17th. We will not be checking out new books over spring break, and we will resume check outs in April.

Week of March 2nd

Learning This Week:

In math, we are finishing up our double digit addition and will begin moving into double digit subtraction next week. We made our own number lines from 1- 100 and are exploring strategies that help us master our double digit addition skills.

In writing, we continued to focus on adding description when writing our story introduction. We have explored the 5 W's (who, what, when, where and why) and how to use the five senses to describe the setting in our story. We learned about different entertaining beginnings and how to add sound effects and dialogue to catch our readers attention.

For social studies, we are continuing our journey to Iqaluit and exploring traditions, legends and festivals.
